The 233 bones a human body makes up to 14% of the body weight. Joints or articulations are structures formed by the articulation of the surfaces of two or more bones.
Joint Classification: Human body has around 400 joints classified as synovial, cartilaginous, fibrous and combination joints based on the structure. Functionally there are immovable synarthrosis, slightly movable amphiarthrosis and freely movable diarthrosis joints.
Synovial joints, based on the type of movement are further classified into gliding (plane) joint having a flat or slightly curved articular surface, hinge joint having a convex part of bone fitting into the concave part of another bone, pivot (swivel) joint having a bone with a rounded end fitting into a groove of another bone, condylar joint having a bony surface that is oval-shaped fitting into a concave surface of another bone and ball-and-socket joint where the round end of one bone fits into the concave socket of the other bone.
