Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is group of symptoms including abdominal pain, change in pattern of bowel movement without any evident cause. Often these symptoms will appear for long time that it negatively affects the quality of life.
Cause
Etiology of IBS is idiopathic. It is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Usually seen as gut- brain axis problems, gut motility disorders, intestinal infection genetic factors or food sensititvity. In most of the cases, intestinal infection is triggering factor for the onset of IBS. There is a strong relation with stressful life or other psychological factors.
Classification
Based on symptoms, Diarrhoea predominant(IBS-D), Constipation predominant (IBS-C), Alternating stool pattern (IBS-A) and pain predominant. Constantly seen post-infection IBS is also categorized separately.
Signs & Symptoms
Abdominal pain or discomfort in association with frequent diarrhea or constipation and uncertain bowel routine are common symptoms which are experienced as acute attacks with urgency of bowel movements, feeling of incomplete evacuation, bloating or distention. Disorders such as anxiety, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome are often associated with IBS.
