Acne, also known as Acne Vulgaris , is a common skin condition that affect the hair follicles spread all over the body. Acne condition varies from simple comedones to complicated cystic forms. They appear at any age group and are usually seen on face, back, shoulders, chest and upper arms. The condition is not dangerous or a major disease. But in most cases, it leaves a scar on the skin. Acne can be described as a symptom of other clinical conditions irrespective of systems.
Cause
Acne depends on the various factors as Hormonal changes as in puberty, Genetic factors, Menstrual cycles, Environmental factors as in hot and humid climates, External psychological factors as in anxiety, stress etc. Diet such as skimmed milk, chocolates, fat, and carbohydrate rich food worsen acne condition.
Pathophysiology
Acne is formed in hair follicles which are connected to oil glands called sebaceous gland that produce serum, consisting dead skin cells, to expel through sweat pores. The causative factors triggers the glands to block hair follicles that may form inflammation in it.
Types
Acne may vary from simple spots to multiple cystic appearances.
Whiteheads are closed plugged pores that remain under the skin
Blackheads: are open plugged pores that are black and appear on the surface of the skin.
Papules: are small, tender bumps that are red at their base due to inflammation and pus at the top as the pus form sebum oozes out.
Nodules: appears on the surface of the skin as a large solid, painful, purple and deep rooted.
Cysts: larger than nodules spherical engorged and painful filled with thick pus.
Ayurveda Treatment for Acne Vulgaris
Underlying diagnosed cause should be managed along with this treatment.
Ayurveda internal medicine pacifies the vitiated pitta and kapha and purifies blood there by reducing the inflammatory or cystic condition without leaving any debris. External medicated lepana according to the dosha condition of person will be prescribed. It clears off acne without any scars.
Panchakarma regular purifactory measure can increase the blood circulation and improving the activity of hormones. For hard acne, rakthamokshana can be applied for fast relief. Yoga meditation can bring the stress hormones down and enhance the free flow of blood.
Preventive measures
Wash face with warm water twice daily. Avoid using normal body lotions or soaps. Do not scrub or squeeze acne as it may worsen the condition. Pus or residue oozing may be cleaned with salted warm water soaked clean soft towel. Avoid using chemicals over face for regular wash. Use loose cloths if acne is over body.
